Made sustainably

Sustainability is in everything we do at Little Botanic Label. Not just the beanbags themselves, but all the materials we use —from fabric to filling, shipping, and packaging. This isn't always the easiest approach, but in my opinion, there's only one way to do business : sustainably.

Sometimes that means we spend a little more time searching for the right fabric, material, or packaging. But when I see the end result, with sustainable choices and no unnecessary waste, I remember why I do this.

Sustainable fabrics with different textures

Our beanbags are made from fabrics with different textures, so each beanbag feels unique. 80% of our fabrics are 100% cotton , and all the fabrics we use are Oeko-Tex certified . This means that no substances harmful to humans, animals, or the environment are used during production .

Why not just 100% cotton? Because we want beanbags with different textures, we sometimes make a conscious exception. For example, ribbed fabric feels very different from smooth cotton. But ribbed fabric is never 100% cotton. We constantly balance durability, quality, and playtime. My beanbags stay beautiful, even after endless hours of playtime.

Cherry stones and grape seeds as filling

We fill our bean bags with cherry stones, grape seeds, or a mix of both . This is not only a sustainable choice but also a sensory experience:

  • Cherry stones are larger and rounder, which makes the filling feel coarser.

  • Grape seeds are finer and smaller, which creates a softer, more malleable texture.
This variation makes each beanbag feel slightly different and they also make a different sound when you pick them up or drop them.

So, we don't fill the bean bags with plastic granules, but with cleaned granules that can get wet. Occasionally, there might be a granule that's not quite clean, which can leave a purple stain after washing. If that happens, I'll simply give you a new bean bag. Better that than filling them with plastic granules. It feels so much better, doesn't it? ;)

Handmade, local and sustainable

We make the beanbags ourselves, with a team of five seamstresses who live nearby. Every Tuesday, we meet in the beanbag workshop to exchange fabrics and beanbags. Because we work locally, materials and products don't have to travel unnecessary distances—which is not only practical but also more sustainable.

Our materials come from wholesalers in the Netherlands , and we source the kernels from the Netherlands and Germany . It might be cheaper if we sourced everything outside the EU, but for me, something else is more important. The shorter the supply chain, the more environmentally friendly the choice.

Plastic-free packaging

Plastic-free packaging isn't always the easiest option, but I believe it's the only right choice. That's why we package everything as consciously as possible:

  • In shops, the bean bags are tied together with a nice cotton cord – without plastic packaging.

  • Loose bean bags have a product wrapper instead of a plastic bag.

  • Orders placed in the webshop are shipped in a compact letterbox-sized box , perfectly fitting six beanbags. No unnecessarily large boxes, no air bubbles, just exactly what's needed.

Packaging without waste

We also choose sustainable alternatives in our printing:

  • Our product and thank you cards are printed on paper made from agricultural waste.

  • We are increasingly replacing stickers with stamps , because a stamp can be used over and over again.

  • When we use stickers, they are also printed on paper made from waste.

For me, sustainability means making conscious choices without compromising quality or fun. And you can feel and see that!

Love,
Patty
